Alice woke Kitty the following morning with a cup of tea and a look of eager enquiry on her narrow face.

‘I’ve heard as there was another murder yesterday,’ her friend said as she slid the tea tray onto the bedside table next to Kitty.

‘Yes, that’s right, the Russian dancer Ivan Bolsova has been killed. Inspector Greville sent a constable to the beach to find us yesterday afternoon.’ Kitty sat herself up in bed and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. It seemed that it hadn’t taken long for news of the murder to reach Dartmouth.

‘The inspector telephoned the hotel after you and Mary told him as you’d gone to Goodrington for a picnic with Captain Bryant.’ Alice set out two cups, one of delicate porcelain for Kitty and a thicker plain cup for herself.

Kitty scooted over and patted the rose-coloured satin coverlet to invite Alice to sit down beside her. ‘How did you hear there had been a murder?’

Alice blushed as she concentrated on pouring them both a cup of tea. ‘Dr Carter’s car was seen parked at Palm Lodge next to your car and the police motor. It don’t take long for word to get around as you know, miss.’ She added milk to the cups with a generous hand.

Kitty accepted her cup from Alice and settled herself against her pillows before telling her friend of yesterday’s events. The maid listened attentively, her eyes wide with astonishment.

‘Oh dear, miss, they sounds a rum lot at that house.’ Alice shook her head in disbelief. ‘Although, I think I might have heard that name somewhere recently,’ she said, frowning when Kitty told her about David Fairweather’s unexpected arrival at the house.

‘It’s clear that he’s someone that Lady Winspear knows very well, or she would not have asked him to stay, especially at such a delicate time. I mean, her husband and her lover both dead within hours of one another.’ Kitty savoured her tea.

‘She doesn’t sound like a lady that likes to be without a gentleman friend.’ Alice gave Kitty a meaningful look.

‘I don’t think she’s much of a lady. Oh dear, now I sound like Mrs Craven. Lettice was an actress before she married Sir William.’

Alice clicked her fingers. ‘Of course, that’s it, miss. That’s where I know that Mr Fairweather’s name from. The touring company at Babbacombe. They’m performing at different theatres with a modern play. I went the other week with our Dolly, I’m sure as he’s the one who played the lead. His name was on the playbill. Good-looking with dark hair?’

‘Well, it sounds as if he could be the same man. It would account for how Lettice knows him if they worked together at some point,’ Kitty mused. There had been something theatrical about his entrance and the way he and Lettice had greeted one another.

Alice’s eyes sparkled. ‘He could have killed Sir William and that Russian dancer all for the love of Lady Winspear so they could get their hands on the money.’

‘Inspector Greville will be checking out his alibi for both murders, I’m certain of that.
